On July 4, 1939 the Orioles were playing the Giants. Who lost? Did the Orioles win? Or did the Giants win? Note: this was the day that Lou Gehrig quitted baseball because of ALS.

In 1939, the Baltimore Orioles would have been a minor league team playing in the International League. There was a Jersey City Giants in the league that season. The International League was a AA minor league and the highest level of minor league baseball at the time.

However, they were not playing each other on July 4, 1939. The Jersey City Giants split a double-header with the Newark Bears on that date in Jersey City.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find confirmation of a game involving the Orioles.

I did find that these two teams split a double header on May 28, 1939 and June 20, 1939. Baltimore deated Jersey City 7-4 on June 26. The Little Giants defeated the Orioles on August 20 in Baltimore, then Baltimore took both games of a double header on August 21. Jersey City clinched the league title by defeating Baltimore 3-2 on September 7.

The Giants were the affiliate for the New York Giants. They finished first in the league that year with a 89-64 record under the leadership of Bert Niehoff. They lost to 4th place Newark Eagles 4 games to 2 in the first round of the playoffs. Rochester won the league championship. Outfielder Johnny Dickshot was the club's star, leading the IL in batting average (.355) and triples (16). They set a single game Minor League Attendance record on April 20 that year when 45,211 attended their game against Newark.

The Orioles were managed by Hall-of-Famer Rogers Hornsby in 1939. It was the last season they were not affiliated with a Major League franchise. They finished with a 68-85 record.

The New York Giants of the National League played a doubleheader against the Boston Bees on July 4th 1939.
That's the only thing I can find, although if you are referring to a minor league game, the name of the league would help.
There were two Giants teams in the ***** Leagues, but no Orioles, unless Orioles was an unofficial nickname of one of the teams.

Gehrig announced his retirement on Tuesday, 04-July-1939, but had played his last game months earlier (30-April).

The Giants were at that time an NL team in New York, and the Orioles were 15 years away, still playing in St. Louis as the AL Browns.

Back then, teams routinely played doubleheaders on July 4th no matter what day of the week it fell. This year, the Yankees hosted the Washington Senators, losing the first game 3-2, and triumphing in the second game, 11-1.

Well considering that in 1939 the Baltimore Orioles did not yet exist, I find your question a bit confusing. In 1939 they were still the St. Louis Browns.

I've not decided but my local team in the United League Baseball (independent league here in Texas) has a game at 6, against a team whose home games are less than an hour away. Should be fun if I do go .. just haven't decided if I'm going to SPI or not yet

The New York Giants lost twice, as did the Phillies. So did the Cubs, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds and Indians. The Yankees won one, but lost one, and then both the Philidelphia Athletics and St. Louis Browns lost twice.
