they are there to be indentified easily. Because those helmets with the green dots have the mics that the coaches talk to the quarterbacks with, so that helmet is the only one with the mic in it, can you imagine if a tackle was wearing the mic'd up helmet?

they were put on to show which one is the quarterbacks helmet, to show which helmet is the one that will be receiving the plays from the coaches on the sidelines

They indicate which helmets have radios. Only one player is allowed to have a radio.

It is an on/off switch. If you look at the sidelines, you will see the backup quartbacks circles are red, meaning they are turned off, while the one who is playing is green, meaning they are activated.
