I believe boogers are a combination of dead skin, hair, and all the crap your nose hair has filtered out through the air you breathe, with a little mucus thrown in t kick it up a notch. The purpose of them is to get rid of the dirt in your nose.....

Each time that you take a breath, there are three very important things that happen.
1. The air that you breathe in is cleaned by tiny hairs in your nose, trapping little bits of dirt and dust and germs that come in through your nose.
2. As you breathe, the air is made slightly wet. Your nose having damp passages does this.
3. The next thing that takes place when air enters your nose is that the air is warmed. This happens because the blood flows through the lining of the nose and gives off heat.
The result is a wet, warm, slippery collection of mucus.

boogers are dried nasal mucus (or snot) that naturally forms in the nasal cavity. Its needed to block and get rid of dirt and germs. The mucus is usually carried down into the throat (yes you swallow it ) by the cilia lining the cavity. As you guessed not all of it is swallowed and the mucus that is closer to the nostrils dries from the outside air hence forming "boogers"

Boogers are the dust and dirt you breath in everyday. Your nose hair filters them so they dont enter your lungs. You also secrete mucus in your nose that holds onto the dust and dirt you breath in. And with all the air going in and out, it hardens the mucus thus making boogers!
TA-DA! Isnt the body AMAZING?!

Its just from your your sinuses, its a form of mucus coming out. Your sinuses make about a quart of it everyday. The mucus protects your lungs, and it collects dust and other stuff you breath in. It comes out as a "booger." It means your sinuses are working right.

The purpose of boogers is to trap outside particles from invading your respiratory system. The mucus traps them so you can blow them out safely and infection free.

There are hairs in your nose which help to filter out dust and stuff from the air you breathe, and then there's mucus which helps wash them out. When the mucus dries, you have boogers.
Its all part of the body's attempt to protect itself. And that's why you shouldn't eat them - they are full of dust and stuff.

It's the junk that your nose filters out of the air you breathe. It keeps your lungs from getting junked up.
Have you ever noticed all the particles in the air in a light beam?

To be picked. Your mucus membrane creates mucus, and the mucus catches dust and other small foreign objects as they pass through your nose so they don't go into your lungs
