think of it like this the horizonatol line goes the same way as the horizon. its flat the vertical line is up and down

I always used to have trouble remembering this. The way I remember it is that the horizon goes across when you are looking out over the ocean etc (left/right), and horizontal is a derivative of this word which means it goes left/right too.
