Settlers of Catan with the Islands of Catan, and the Cities and Knights of Catan expansions. Who cares if the game goes for 8 hours.

Of all time, it would have to be chess. Just based on the sheer bredth of how many people have played it, how many people love it. There are schools which teach it exclusively.

Monopoly. Even though it is a very popular game, I think it is not that great of a game. Far too much luck is dependant on winning, or have two players collude to make a winning play. Even with ideal play, If you don't land on enough starting property, you will lose. Also, if you start losing, there is no way to recover, so players will make suicide plays which trade with other players to let that other player win.

Risk: Chess for the unwashed masses. Lots of pieces. Tons of dice rolling. There are calculated risks, but a good player will outlast a bad player a vast majority of the time. Turn order is good, and it is just a really nice social game. 2 players is weak, but 3-6 players is fun.

Apples to Apples. 3-?
Every house should own a copy. Period. Fast game play, 0 learning time. 0 rules questions. You have choices, and they end up being fun. Every player is envolved every turn. True hardcore gamers may find this a bit simplistic, but when you can get your entire family playing or a drunken dorm party, it is a great thing

Settlers: Klaus Truber did something great there. It is a really nice social game where the more you cooperate, the better you do. Game flow is crisp. I think that the cities and knights make it a great game. That is the style of euro gaming vs american(roll the dice see who wins). Very good game, and a great one to help people go from liking games to being a gamer.

Power Grid: Great game for gamers who want to enjoy themselves. 0 dice rolling, it is all based upon personal choices. With vicious penalties for leading the game, every player is in it until the final turn, and then it will come down to a matter of one or two dollars. Definately not the best game of all time, but it is still a great game for people who like settlers. (Hint: if you own settlers, buy this one too, and don't waste your time on the catan histories chronicles. Not worth it)

Clue: Love it. Fast paced, and every player has a chance to win all game long. It is great for all ages and Tim Curry made a movie about it. What more can you want?

So, in summation, Chess has to be considered the "best game of all time" based on numbers, just like the Bible has to be considered the best book of all times. Most people have played/read them, but really can be dry and only true afficianatoes really get into them.

Clue: Best old school game
Risk: Best shake up some dice
Settlers: Good stuff
Apples to Apples: Best party game
Power Grid: Honorable mention cause I like it.
Monopoly: Overrated

Hi there,
To download for free GNU Backgammon you can click here: http://j.mp/1pUDW87

it's the full version, avaiable for free! very fast to install
It?s true that if you search for computer games you can find all kinds. Some of these are quite appealing, and others aren?t, but you can still find programs that offer special and unique content; like when you used to play on those Sunday afternoons sitting down to the best board games. This is the case with GNU Backgammon, a game that will immediately transport you back to those good times.
For me, it's the best game ever.

I like Monopoly as well. If you play it by the real rules (no exceptions), it can take a surprisingly short amount of time to play especially with two people. Clue is pretty fun as well, if you don't cheat (ha ha). I also liked Bonkers personally. Bonkers was a pretty accurate description of the game. In Bonkers your turn could last for several minutes until someone else finally stopped you. It was crazy!!

Catan is certainly in the top 5, but I find it hard to name the best 'ever'. (I also like the unexpanded version the best, Seafarers and Cities/Knights just make it feel long.) Other games that belong near the top...

- Ticket to Ride
- Acquire
- Carcassone
- Chess
- Backgammon

I love Risk, but I can never find enough people to play it with me. The last time I had a real shot at playing a game of it, my friends little brother wanted to join in. AFTER we had already finished setting up all the pieces (for those of you who have never played this can take as long to do as playing some other board games). We told him it was too late to start his own faction, but that he could team up with his dad or brother, but apparently that wasn't satisfactory for him, and he proceeded to flip the board over. Before we started the real game. I just went home at that point.
