Well I didn't realise what is was at the time, but I felt a kind of 'pop' inside and I thought I had wet myself (not a lot, just a dribble), which I was horrified by but blamed on my heavily pregnant state! I didn't realise but my waters had started to break (they never actually broke properly just trickled!). So I had no idea that I was in labour ntil about eight hours later when I woke up in agony at about 2.30 am. It felt like really bad period pains. Really really bad. Gas & Air worked wonders for me. Just make sure you take really deep breaths.

It could just be that your hormones and body is getting ready, hence the sick feeling - i felt really sick with my first child, but not with my second.
With my first child, it was the "plug" coming away that let me know i was starting in labour - unfortunately it was 5 days of slow labour!
With my second it was the really bad pains.
If you are unsure, contact your labour ward and they will advise you what to do/when to go in.
Try having warm baths, just relaxing and letting the water cover your belly.
Also, i found that rocking my hips from side to side really helped ease of the strength of the pains.
Moving around is also good if you think you are in labour - it can go 2 ways: either the pains and sick feelings will ease off if the baby isnt yet ready to come out, or it will encourage the baby to move down into the birth canal ready for a definite labour.
Good luck to you and your baby, not that you will need it.

Did not know at the time that it was the beginnings of labour as I had many weeks to go before the due date. The night before, I had sharp pains in tummy area every hour or so but a call to the midwife assured me that it was Braxton Hicks. At 1 am I was trying to sleep but not able to as the pain - like a weight bearing down on the pelvis was really strong...every 15-20 minutes. After a couple of hours the pain was too much and I had to get up and keep busy, as well as reading up on the signs of labour!!! By 6 am I had had the bloody show and the midwife told me to go to hospital. Pains had stopped by the time I was questioned by a doctor at around 7.30am. But a scan at 9 am showed that I was fully dilated!! Baby arrived around one and a half hours later.
Trust your body...mother nature knows what she`s doing

1st time - i thought i was having braxton hicks (false labour pains) as i had been having them on and off for a few weeks. Agter 20 mins i realised that this could be the start of the whole thing. Did not get much sleep that night and the contractions got stronger and closer together throughout the next day.
2nd time - waters broke as i got out of the shower but no labour pains til about 4 or 5 hours later (i did not have any braxton hicks with that pregnancy)

I had an induced labour. First lot of pessary did nothing - the second lot kicked in at around 7pm with an immediate excrutiating pain in the back, it felt as if it was being cracked open (incidently, the Midwife told me I was over reacting and couldn'y possibly be in that much pain and told me to "get a grip". Got sent to the delivery suite to get rid of me off ward. The Midwife up there was brilliant, took control, 30 mins later, out pops my Son!! From onset of pain to birth - 3hrs.
.........the actual birth. Can you imagine trying to push an Elephant through a cat flap...........!

I woke up one morning with pains (what feel like period pains) which turned out to be contractions. I didn't know it was labour until I started timing them and they were exactly 10 minutes apart and coming on gradually, then reaching a peak, and then dying away - just as described in my antenatal classes.

1. A pain different from Braxton Hicks. It was deep and long and started in my lower back.
2. "Bloody show"- the "stopper" or plug was released, and the pinkish color discharge is supposed to be the onset of contractions.
3. When the nurses/doctors broke my water

my waters broke. but it wasnt a gush just a trickle when i was in bed. i actually thought i had wet myself. it was only when it did it again moments later that i thought oh my god it's my waters!!!! labour didnt start for about 8 hours afterwards though, which was annoying! sitting waiting, trying to sleep but waking up at the slightest twinge thinking this is it.
ah well it was worth it. well, it must have been or i wouldnt be doing it again!!
