Just curious, since it would have taken collaboration from the McCanns' friends to cover up this whole deal. I, for one, would not go along with it, no matter how good friends I was with someone. I have children and don't intend to go to jail because my friends decided to cover up an accidental death.
I find it unlikely that the 5 or 7 friends (I forget how many were there at the Tapas bar) would go along with it, lying to the police, etc. just to cover the McCanns' butts.

I could probably convince 5 friends to help me cover up a murder. I'm excellent at selling my ideas and can convince people into doing things. I don't think I would though. I don't feel like going to prison and being accosted by a lesbian gang.

Those friends all shared the same value system, didn't they?
Each one of them had kids left in their respective hotel rooms with no supervision, night after night while on holiday. Wouldn't they each rationalize that it could have happened to any of them?
For some people, kids are only an extension of their egos. In that case, what happens to them during 'down time' (read: no photo op or other cutesy event) has no importance to them.

You have to remember these friends also left their kids alone and possibly feared prosecution for child neglect. Instead a pity party was made for all of them so that overshadowed the neglect. They needed to cover their own butts also.
