Sure something is odd. If, as a couple of answerers have said, the crash was so catastrophic that the automatic locating device on the plane was destroyed, then there was no reason to think he could have survived. And if he HAD survived, as was the stated hope of the people searching for him, he WOULD have activated his Breitling watch, and the device on the plane would have been activated as well. He would also have started enough of a fire to make some visible smoke. Surely if he had food and water on board (which he did) he would have a means to start a survival fire. Something does not add up here. There seems to be more than the normal desire to find his body before some hiker or hunter does. Because if he did go down, as they say he did, they know full well that he is dead. Why the extraordinary urgency of such a massive search for a dead man?????

Actually, I have heard theories about the locater on the plane. If he was somehow able to set the plane down safely, it wouldn't necessarily engage the locater. Perhaps he had a heart attack or something and was able to set the plane down but died or became unconscious right away.
If he crashed, it's also possible the crash was so violent that it destroyed any locater.

Its not odd. Its just like Amelia Earhart he was on a spy mission. His plane was not equipped with a black box or locating beacon that you speak of. As for his watch, I don't sleep with him so I don't know if it has a beacon signal on it, but if so the battery would only give it a range of a few hundred yards and it wouldn't last 24 hours.

We don't even need those features in our front garden and our nosy neighbours are calling the authority because we coughed and farted at the same time. I can't abide by nosy people leave us more interesting people alone you interfering feckers!! Otherwise my zombie friend Jack will plant some dog poo on door step and set light to it then rip their head off and shitdown a rubberneck. I wish I could blame rabid poosums but all I can say is the soppy muntjac did their dirty business in the early hours of the morning.

I dont know if there is enough signal for those to work. They have said they have found several plane crashes from years ago. Even some they didnt know about.

as a former pilot i can say that the elt (locaters) most of the time dont go off on impact. there are suppose to, but most of the time dont. what confuses me is why they are searching such a vast area. his citabra plane only has 500 miles of fuel on board. why dont they draw off on the grid 500 north, south, east, west and concentrate on these areas. he was seen heading south, but could have changed his course to either direction after out of sight of the airport. hope they find him.

unless the crash was so sever that it damaged both items.
In that case though he likely died on impact.
