Acid rain (also called acid precipitation) anywhere is the result of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide gases emitted into the atmosphere (from cars and industrial processes).
These gases undergo chemical transformations in the atmosphere (mostly from the interaction of sunlight on them) and are absorbed by water droplets in clouds. When the clouds drop the water (as rain, ice, or snow), you have acid precipitation.
