The goal of any athlete be it team play or individual, is to win the championship. The Cardinals were only 83-78 last season but the won the world series. The 1998 Yankees won 125 games (both regular season and playoffs and won the world series). Can you imagine that Yankee team with all of those victories and not winning the ultimate prize? It would be all for nothing. Give me a championship any day!!

I'd rather have the world series championship. It's what you play for. Noone goes into spring training as a potential contender with focus on being content with simply having an outstanding regular season record, everyone wants that world series championship.
For example: In 2001 the Seattle Mariners won 116 games, obviously they made the post season, and by that time what do you think was more important to them? Being happy that they won 116 games, or trying to get past the Yankees to get to the world series?
I'm sure they weren't feeling too happy about losing in the ALCS, they where still playing to get what every team wants every season, the chance to be that last team standing in October.
In 1980 the Orioles had a franchise best 100 win season, but they where edged out of the post season in the AL east by the Yankees who 103 games that season. In 1983 the Orioles won 98 games and the AL East pennant. They beat the Chicago White Sox 3 to advance to the world series where they beat the nearby Phillies in 5 games. The players from both of those Orioles teams tend talk a lot more about 1983 than 1980.

Let's think - 2001 Mariners win 116 games, but lose to the Yankees in the ALCS. 2006 Cardinals win 83 games, and beat the Tigers in the Series.
My guess is that Seattle fans weren't real pleased to get beat, and I'd even guess that some Cardinals fans figured that an 83 win season was simply average.
As a Cubs fan, I wouldn't care if they finished below .500 if they won the division, got hot and won the World Series. (a possibility this season in that miserable division we call the National League Central) However, I would be horribly disappointed if they won 120 games and then didn't win the series.
For me, I'll take the 85 wins. Bottom line is winning championships, not how bad or good you looked doing it.

I would rather have 85 wins and a World Series. Winning a Championship is better than winning 120 games.

What great stat lol Now of the last p teams that did win game 5 were they 3-2 or were they 2-3 there is a big difference between needing 1 win to claim the title and being 1 game away from elimination. Be tough for Rangers to win another in St. louis but easier then being in a must win 2 like the Cardinals face. I think Rangers in 6. Game 7 be harder to win on the road both then face elimination lol.

UMMMM.... yeah. This is a stupid question. The whole reason you play an effing season is to win the World Series no matter how many regular season games you win. Shoot, if the A's could get in with only 81 wins and 81 losses and still win the World Series, I'd be on the top of the world!

who cares the World Series is what it is all about. You want to win that. That has meaning. 120 games and losing the WS is not.

freddy the sock puppet, nyy fan 1, or proud to be a american, you have asked a stupid question of course you want the world series, that is all that matters, you just want your record to be good enough to make the playoffs, as long as you win the ws you dont need a 120 win season
Im with you remember 9/11

85 and World Champs because you can never take away being a champion. Plus if you win 120 games and lose the World Series you could being the biggest disappointment.

I'd rather win 85 and win the WS. Seeing your team win the WS is much more fun and thrilling.
