In the US: To be President or Vice President, you have to be born in the US and be over age 35. And you can only be President for two full terms or 10 years. To be President you have to win the election, or be in the Presidential line of succession and have everyone above you die or become otherwise unavailable. To be Vice President you have to run for Vice President (with a particular Presidential candidate) and you guys have to win, or I think that if you're appointed in the middle of a term, the President picks you, and the Senate might have to confirm you. There are lots of other positions in the executive branch (like Secretary of State) where the President appoints you and the Senate has to confirm you. Or if he appoints you when the congress isn't in session, I think you might get the job automatically for a while. Some positions (like mailman) don't really have any requirements, except you have to get hired.
