Actually they were far from being the only ones. There were
islanders every bit as violent. And some were cannibalistic.
Even the ancient people on the Sandwich Islands, which later
became known as the Hawaiian Islands. They captured their
enemies and tortured them, and like other civilizations, ate
the hearts of their enemies to give them more strength. Or to
make them braver. This seems to be a common practice with
those early civilizations. They had to have a strong sense of
self preservation in order to stay alive and unconquered. They were all superstitious and believed in human sacrifice
hoping the gods would show favor upon them and keep them
in food and shelter and all of the basics of human necessity.
It wasn't until missionaries came to the islands and to the
indians both Aztec and after, that Christian beliefs were
taught and the savage inclinations were squelched. The
Samoan people were savage and they were cannabilistic
and they were one of the last to change, according to what
I've read.
So in answer to your question, I would say, "Self preser-
vation against outside civilizations and tribes. And their
superstitions kept them as savages. And third, they had
lived as they had for decades, and knew no other way to
live. They followed their leaders and accepted their dictation,
out of fear of disobeying. Almost as if their chiefs were
living Gods. Though they also worshipped idols and made
human sacrifices to them.

Were The Mayans Violent

A lot of cultures that existed during the time of the Mayans would be considered violent by today's standards (i.e. Rome and its gladiators). Things were just different then. Instead of blowing people up with bombs from miles away people killed them face-to-face; people were accustomed to death, not just in combat, but due to disease and the environment as well. A big reason would probably be that Mayan religious beliefs involved human sacrifice, which meant that they believed (in some instances) they were participating in an act of worship when they killed one another.

These may give you an idea:

'It is impossible for the tongue to describe, or for man to write a perfect description of the horrible scene of the blood and carnage which was among the people; and every heart was hardened, so that they delighted in the shedding of blood continually.'

'Because they did indulge themselves in sorceries, and in idolatry or idleness, and in babblings, and in envyings and strife; wearing costly apparel; being lifted up in the pride of their own eyes; persecuting, lying, thieving, robbing, committing whoredoms, and murdering, and all manner of wickedness;'

'For so exceedingly do they anger that it seemeth me that they have no fear of death; and they have lost their love, one towards another; and they thirst after blood and revenge continually.'
