Interesting question...a good dinner discussion topic provided the attendees have a higher IQ than the beast they are consuming.
The single most significant event was the development of thermonuclear weapons. Humankind had finally developed a way to destroy all life on Earth. What took billions of years to evolve could be made waste in a few hours and days.
Prophecy: You will live long enough to witness a nuclear blast in the US.

IMO, the most significant event in the last 1000 years is the start of Islam. It's had the most effects of any event in that time period. Islam is one of the most widespread religions (after Christianity), it kept knowledge alive during the Dark Ages, brought Europe back into the light through the Crusades, helped the white world discover/rediscover (depends on what you believe) the Americas by blocking off the Silk Road, reintroduced ideas of tolerance to the western world, and many other things.

The most important event must be the discovery of the New World by Columbus in the 15th century. WIthout it, not only could Europe not prosper the way it does now, as it wouldve had no trade to become very powerful on, but the Americas could still remain untouched. The value of this discovery is constantly played down or ignored in history, but without it there would be no world as we wealthy bigots know it.

The greatest events of history affect the greatest number for the longest periods. By this standard, no event could be more important than the Resurrection of Christ.
But, since you qualified your question to just the last thousand years...
The appearance of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ to the boy Prophet [Joesph Smith] is the greatest event that has occurred in this world since the Resurrection of the Master. This lead to the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth following the great apostasy. This message is a world message.

there's a few, but being the history nerd that i am when i take a look it def. ha sto be wilhem 11 rise to power. he took otton von bismarck to create out of what was prussia(today germany) a nation that would self destruct. he pulled out of the the three leagues emperor alliance, got involved in the franco prussian war, and just completely destroyed germany. his actions would have re precautions that can be trace on to the world wars. this man made big mistakes.
