Over the years, the wild cats the elves brought along with them absorbed something of the magical nature of their keepers and evolved into the wondrous elven cats of today. Whether special magical means were used to promote this evolution is unclear, but it seems probable that some such force was involved.
Elven cats are very intelligent, with many being able to converse in a rudimentary form of elvish. In some cases, elven cats have attached themselves to families of gnomes, brownies, and other woodland creatures. In these instances they also speak a basic form of those languages. Unlike many other species of felines, elven cats enjoy swimming and playing in water. They are, like all cats, excellent climbers and can leap 20 feet or more with ease.
Combat: Elven cats make separate attacks for each of their fore claws and a bite attack, and automatically rake with their back claws for 1d4 damage if both claw attacks succeed. If one or both claws miss, the rake is not performed.
Elven cats are highly magical. They often use their spell-like abilities to deal with adversaries they prefer to avoid. All spell-like abilities act as if they the cat were a 9th level spellcaster.
Detect Thoughts (Sp): Once per day, an elven cat may Detect Thoughts as the spell, though it will only detect the intentions of the target.
Enlarge or Cantrip [trip] (Sp): Once per day, an elven cat may cast Enlarge as the spell, or trip a target with a Cantrip. A successful Reflex save (DC 19) negates the Cantrip. When Enlarged, the cat?s HD and damage double.
Reduce or Tree Shape (Sp): Twice per day, an elven cat may Reduce as the spell, or Tree Shape into the form of a tree limb.
Pass without Trace (Sp): Elven cats are under the effect of the Pass without Trace spell at all times.
Skills: *While in wilderness areas, an elven cat?s Hide bonus increases to +70, its Move Silently increases to +79, and all checks are automatically taken as a 20.
**The +10 bonus to Jump is only applied when determining running and standing jumps, not for high jumps.

Converter?s Note: (Reference book: Monstrous Compendium ? Forgotten Realms) DON?T SHOOT ME! I know, this little? cute? cuddly? MONSTER seems a little much, but with simple explanations and percentages to work on, what do you expect? ??move silently 99.9% of the time and can hide in shadows (in wilderness areas) with a 90% chance of success.? Give me a f?ing break! That part I gave a minor limit by forcing both to be in the wilderness. ??enjoy swimming and playing in water.? *sigh* Again, working off of descriptions. That, and since a tiny animal not built for swimming cannot move that fast in the water anyway, I didn?t think it would have that much of an impact. The +10 to Jump for distance? well? That gives a decent range. Since they can ?jump 20 feet or more with ease?, I?d assume on a bad day they can clear just over 10, while on a good day they can reach well over what?s easy for them. Trip no longer exists, so I made it a cantrip. So sue me. The original gave a save, so I adopted the ?10 + spell level + caster level? equation. As the way its use is described, I see the cat running away instead of attacking afterward, so the DC seemed to fit. The other (Sp) are exactly as the original. The ability scores, I admit, I took a little liberty with, but it was to define some of the secondary attributes (modified damage, AC, etc.) I used its Dex modifier instead of Str for attacks since doing the same with the 3e cat is closer to their values than using Str (though I still can?t add it up), and damage isn?t that high, so it equal?s out. As far as the improved familiar goes, think of it this way. The DM gets to give the familiar a personality. These things commonly hang out with elves. 'Nuff said.

Yes, Elven cats can be very familiar. Now, if you're meaning can they be a familiar, then yes. They provide the same benefit a normal cat does as a familiar, which is a +3 on Move Silently checks. You would also use the Cat entry in the MM for his stats, modified for your class level as shown on the table on page 53 of the Players Handbook.

I don't know what skills/weapons/spells you have, but try this: 1. Get a good follower and give it good weapons and armor. 2. Sneak up to the cat and tell your follower to wait. 3. Do a sneak attack with your strongest attack (preferably ranged) and run like hell! 4. When the cat is busy fighting your follower, help out by sniping with a bow/bolt spells. Oh, and don't expect to keep your follower!
