So people will not get a lot of unwanted phone calls from people who can't resist. The 555 prefix only has one number:
(area code)555-1212. It will get you directory assistance for the area code. Try it pick an area code and dial 555-1212 and you will hear "Welcome to Directory Assistance.

the 555 prefix does not exist. If they used a real prefix, people would call it, kinda like the '80's song 867-5309

because this prefix is never used in real life, just "reel" life.it was set up that way so crazies wouldnt dial what might be someones actual number and harass or bother them, thinking movies/reality are the same thing.

Because it would be inappropriate and people would protest if the actors dialed "666" instead? Your guess is as good as mine on that one.
