It's important because black history IS American history, just like black culture IS American culture. You cannot separate the two no matter how hard you try.

Well, when you consider that the different people who have lived on the Earth have all lived on the same planet, and have all had contact with each other, and influenced each other, it makes sense to study all peoples.

What would be best would be if history were taught in such a way that it didn't routinely exclude people, and then have to include them, but were more complete.

Until that happens, you have to learn about everyone in a more fractured way.

Since African Americans are part of America, to understand American history, you have to understand Americans.

Not just some of them, but all of them.

I find that African American history is very interesting. I wish it was taught as part of the general American History curriculum in schools, and not just in February. From what I have found out in college is that if the school was all white they didn't even learn black history. There are so many misconceptions of what life was like for black people in America, if you learn about the history, in a regular context during the school year and not for 28 days, then you really can learn a lot. And it stops the idea of separation, which what they are creating now by just teaching it in February.

African history is rich in art, culture, and agricultural and military innovation. It's important for those who descended from Africa- especially those in America (who lost their African history) to learn about the accomplishments and social evolution of Africa before the onset of shipping slaves out of Africa to help to counteract some of the degradation and the denial of competency and accomplishment that have those descendants- who are still in a transition from that degradation and denial into a more equality based society- in any doubt of themselves as African descendants.

Because African American history is inseparable from American History, but American History traditionally has deleted African American history from its books and ignored it.
