Just like what everyone else said, no anti-virus software is 100%.
AVG is very good though, and I've been using it for several years now, and really only use it, I recently purchased an HP desktop that has Norton on it, and once the temporary subscription to this Norton runs out, I'll remove it from my machine and install AVG, without a second thought.

One of the things about AVG that's alot different than other options, very low overhead, no alot of cpu cycles, or ram used with it running in the background. And it's FREE!!!

It is sincerely true, that AVG Free Edition CANNOT detect 100% viruses nor, protect you.

The only way to be 100% Virus FREE is, to disconnect yourself from the internet, as, that is the way about 98% of Computer User's Get Viruses.

At this moment, the top Freeware (detection-rate wise) has to be Avira AntiVir.

It detects ABOUT 98-99% Malware/Viruses. Again, There is NO AntiVirus that can detect 100% Viruses. How do we know? There are new viruses being programed/released as we "type".

Download Avira:

Actually this report came from Kaskersky and there is not an antivirus with 99-100% detection rate, Kaspersky has 97.9, Second is Norton with 96.8, Then McAfee with 91.6, Trend Micro 91.2 and Microsoft with 82.4% Detection Rate.

To elaborate on the short answer above. No anti-virus software can be guaranteed to be 100% effective. New viruses are released all the time, and anti-virus writers are constantly writing new definitions for new threats. AVG is great software, as is Norton, Panda, Trend, and a variety of others.

I truly think you should give Avast a try, it uses a heuristic scanning method and its very easy on pc resources, rather it wont bog down your system. it catches most new viruses before there actually in the new definitions which update at least once a week. ive used it for over 3 years now and its saved me from a total system format atleast 3 times.... btw firewalls are a joke, use the one windows has, its more then good enough, and if your using a router (wired or wireless) your even more protected....

No antivirus can give you a 100% protection guarantee. There are only varying degrees of protection, and AVG does figure in the top five, so I would figure it is very good.

Nothing is 100% effective, take note that it is a free edition, but it is Good for Virus detection and protection..

since it is free, it is limited only to virus issues, not in malware, adware, spyware, keyloggers..etc...

No, AVG can detect about 82.82% of viruses. NOD32 & Kaspersky can detect over 99%.

The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/

I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):
