I keep seeing these and i just don't get it. Is it a functional modification? If so, I've racked my brain and can't come up with a good reason. If anything, wouldn't it produce more drag? And if it's for aesthetic reasons then... I must be getting old because it looks like sh*t!!!! It looks like a sore thumb sticking out of place.

The fender-bobbing explanation makes sense. I guess what threw me off was that nowadays you see them on bikes even WITH fenders. This is a great example of fashion following function. Kind of like how heels were originally made to keep horse-riding boots in the stirrups and eventually the style outlived the function.

Goes back to the sixties. When you bob the rear fender it's gotta go somewhere else. like to the side. I have sidemounts on 2 of my bikes. Along with a suicide clutch and jockey shift it's what makes a chopper cool.

just a modification custom bike makers like to add to make theirs different form factory installations.
I kinda like it, just because it IS different than original but it serves no purpose other than personal preference.
Actually it is a very old modification, havent seen the movie for a long time so I may be wrong but I am pretty sure one of the bikes in Easy Rider had a side mount.

Side mount is to get it off the rear fender. For whatever reason. Bob the fender, just think it looks cool, whatever. I don't like the ones that mount the plate sideways. Makes them hard to read. Must be why that's illegal here.

first of all its not gonna cause more drag because it doesnt stick out farther than the riders leg, at least mine doesnt because it is vertical, second of all, alot of bikes from the factory with rear mounted plates just look like s**t.....its a good way to clean up the rear of the bike,,especially if you want a custom paint job to fill up the fender...

they are purely for aesthetic reasons. I have had several Harley's and for me the original license plate holder works fine!!! Different taste for different people. Some friends of mine have them and love them, but they are not for me.
