the whole question : Chlorine-35 is one isotope of chlorine. (35 is the mass number) chlorine-37 is another isotope of chlorine. How many protons and neutrons are in each isotope of chlorine?

i have it answered but idk if its right

Cl-35: 17 protons, 18 neutrons

Cl-37: 17 protons, 20 neutrons

Yeah whatever :), anyways there are 18-neutron and 17 protons for chlorine-35. For chlorine-37 there are 20 neutrons and 17 protons. Also remember that the # of protons do not change, only the neutron to form an isotope.

All isotopes of chlorine have 17 protons (that's what makes them chlorine atoms).

The mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons, so for Cl-35, there are 35-17 = 18 neutrons. In Cl-37, there are 37-17 = 20 neutrons.

Well, the number of protons determines what kind of atom it is. 6 protons makes carbon, for example, regardless of how many neutrons are with it.

So how many protons are in Chlorine? In every case, in every isotope, the number of protons is always the same. ALWAYS.

And then how many neutrons must there be in each isotope?

Here's a hint: isotopes only differ from each other in the number of neutrons. They always have the same number of protons. And the number of protons is the atomic number. It's also equal to the number of electrons in non-ionized forms.

Argon's atomic number is 18 so you know the number of protons is 18 (atomic number = number of protons). The atomic mass is 38 which is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons so the number of neutrons = 38 - 18 = 20 Chlorine's atomic number is 17. So, if you also have 20 neutrons, you are talking about Cl-37
