Sen. John Warner (yes, a Republican) asked Gen. Petraeus if our mission is making America safer. He said that he thought what we are doing was the best course of action to achieve the objectives in Iraq. Warner repeated, "Does that make America safer?" and Petraeus said, "You know, I don't know actually".

If the lead General of the armed forces in Iraq does not know if our involvement there is making America safer, isn't it time to take a long hard look at what we are really doing there?

Why the heck should he know the answer to that question? He is charged with winning in Iraq, not the civil defense of the US. It's a political question.

General Patraeus is a smart guy.

It's not his job to determine if it makes America safer. It's his job to carry out the orders of his commander-in-chief. It's the duty of the president and his strategists to decide if this makes America safer or not.

I have a great deal more respect for the general now, than if he had said "Yes" or "No" to that question.

I wouldn't expect a general to debate the appropriateness of a particular policy the military is charged with carrying out, any more than I'd expect a cashier at Wal-Mart to render an opinion on the appropriateness of Wal-Mart's marketing strategies.

It's long overdue, WITHOUT White House manipulation!

Some of these answerers would jump off a cliff if the Cheney-Bush administration told them to.

They have no ability to think for themselves and by causing such divisiveness in this country are actually hurting the same country they say they love so much!

Guess what? Bush supporters, the few left, do NOT have a monopoly on loving this country.

General Petraeus is not going to embarrass his boss by telling the truth since he could be fired like Generals Shinseki and Pace.

That is why he postponed the report until March 2008.

Nice of you to catch up with the rest of the world. We've been saying for 3 years that you weren't making anyone safer by occupying Iraq.

Yes, very much so. Administration apologists are afraid of this, but it is the right thing to do.
