There are ONLY 3 venomous snakes native to NY, none of which is reddish orange. The timber rattlesnake (which is threatened), the massasuaga rattlesnake (which is endangered), and the northern copperhead, which is rarely found in the southernmost part of NY. Humans have sadly done a good job of making sure all 3 are very rare and hardly ever are encountered by people, unless you're really out in the middle of nowhere. Copperhead bites are painful but rarely life-threatening, at that.
What you likely saw was an Eastern Milk Snake, which is has reddish-orange markings, and is found in parts of NY, but is NOT venomous.

A copperhead can be reddish orange in some of its color phases, and can be found towards the southern tier of the state. It can be easily recognized by its shortish, thick body, broad hourglass shaped patches, and "copper penny" colored broad triangular head. It spends most of its time in wet deciduous forests, where it blends almost perfectly with dead leaves.
