maybe,...but probably not.

It is extremely normal for goldfish to change colors. Usually goldfish owners attribute this with age and change of surroundings. Some people even claim that the color of the rocks has something to do with it. All you can do is wait and see if it changes back, it may not.

Hi Feralcat, The pigmentation in Goldfish is extremely unstable & can turn any number of different colours either in patches, all over or never during the [long] lives of these fish so nothing to worry about & I'm afraid there's nothing yo can do to reverse the process.

By the way-well done for adopting this fish & giving him/her a chance. I'm guessing you are new to fish keeping so the attached link should be of use to you for tank maintenance & other useful information. Goldfish should always be housed in at least 20 gallon, lidded, filtered tanks because as well as living many years they may grow over a foot long-best of luck to you both!

Gold fish will do this. Both I and my daughter raise them, I have two large ponds outside and she has a 200 gallon aquarium. She had two beautiful fifteen inch Gold fish that started "Molting" they actually started to peel their scales off, the scales underneath were funny looking. They started to turn a sickly white. She was treating them for various diseases but, I told her to stop. They looked like they were molting, like certain birds do. The scales eventually turned white and now they're a brilliant silver white, very pretty, that was two years ago.

No I have never seen it happen. The green tank didn't do this, genetics did. It would have turned silver anyway.

As long as he doesn't look bad or any sign of sickness he should be fine!
