A custody case is civil and probably not available for a court appointed lawyer . A custody case is near impossible without one . Call your local lawyer referral service or some lawyers in the phone book . They will know if there is a local service available or possibly agree to a reduced fee ... Just gotta start asking . Call the courthouse and ask to speak with the public defenders office . As for June 3 court just tell him to ask for a continuance until he can find a lawyer .

You don't! The court appoints a lawyer for you. That's why they're called court appointed lawyers! Actually it's the judge that does the appointing.

sensible_man is correct. Court appointed counsel is for those who cannot afford counsel on their own, you have to qualify based on income. If you think you qualify, ask the clerk of the court the case is in to point you in the right direction. It's different everywhere, but in some courts the clerk's office has a form you can use to apply.

the court has public defenders. You'd get one through them . Good luck.. because they won't try hard to fight for you like a regular lawyer would.

At your first court appearance, if you don't have a lawyer, the judge will ask you if you want one and if you can afford one. If you qualify, then they will assign you one.

Obtaining a Public Defender is not as easy as it seems on TV. You need to prove that there is no way you cannot afford to hire your own attorney. This can include selling or mortgaging items and property you own.

Easy, ask the court and indicate why you can't afford or obtain your own.

Ask the police for one when you are arrested or questioned. If you are already being charged, ask the judge, or call the public defender's office.

Go to the hearing and tell them you cannot afford an attorney. They will ask you for proof of income and then decide based on that whether you qualify or not.
