What are the uses of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydro chloride acid (HCl)?

In many labs, these are the standard pH modifiers - if you have a solution you want to change, you add some HCl to bring the pH down, or you add some NaOH to bring the pH up. There are other uses, but that's the one most people would think of.
