Jane Kirkpatrick has a good 3 book series that is set in the 1800's. All together in one place is the name of the first. Very good story.

Wow. Seems like an easy question to answer, but its really not. How about Shakespeare? Like Othello, it is not exactly "lovey dovy". The thing is that modern "fiction" was just being invented in 1500, so there wasn't much except some translations of the Bible. Evn the Greek classics were scarce. One of the first was Chacer from England. Then there were Boccachio's "Deukalion" in Florence. Thats all i can come up with. Other writings (not from Europe) would include some Persian cats like Omar Hayam and Hafiz.

If you're looking for an olden age one, look no further than Jane Austen! Jane Austen novels are set around the time you listed. I love her novel "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice" is, of course, a must!

If you're looking for something merely SET at that time, try "A Great and Terrible Beauty". It's a little bit more for the teenage generation and has a bit of fantasy in it, but it's set around your time frame.

Books set around that time are some of the best out there! I love the dances, balls, and over-all glamor and angst of women. Hope you find some good ones!!

Hard Times by Charles Dickens. Great implied sarcastic critique of the dehumanization that coupled the industrial revolution.

H. G. Wells wrote "The Time Machine" in 1895. I loved it, but it's a very short book. :)

Go out and grab Perfume by Patrick Suskind. You will love it. Trust me. Check it out on Amazon first if you want to, but it's one of my favorites.
