Koufax probably had the greatest 6 year run of all time. Prior to that he was nothing more than name on a roster. Of course four no-hitters later (one of which was a perfect game), the public realized what a (late bloomer) meant. Koufax was fortunate in that he played on some excellent teams throughout his career. To some extent Carlton did as well. Let's not forget however that Carlton's '72 season might have been one of the top 5 greatest performances in baseball history.

Now, having said all this, I would have to set the scene by saying, IN THEIR PRIME YEARS, I would have to go with Koufax. Koufax knew when to get out mainly because of his arthritis. He would have won over 200 games to be sure. "Lefty" hung around a few years too long and was a shell of his former self by the time he retired.

Koufax was absolutely nasty when he pitched. He retired at the top of his game with shoulder problems. If he continued to pitch he would have set all records. Maybe the greatest pitcher of all times.

If you're talking about each in their prime, it would probably be Koufax. If you mean today, it would be Carlton - being about 10 or 15 years younger and not having blown out his arm would be distinct advantages.

Sandy Koufax, all the way

I still believe he could've been in the top five of greatest pitchers all time if he hadn't had to end his career so soon. He was an awesome pitcher, and I don't think anyone could beat him
