It's called a RAD6000. A quote from the link below:

"RAD6000 microprocessors are radiation-hardened versions of the PowerPC chips that powered Macintosh computers in the early 1990s, with 128 megabytes of random access memory (RAM) and capable of carrying out about 20 million instructions per second."

And yes, it does occasionally need updates. Engineers can (and have) made software improvements on earth and then uploaded them through radio signals to the rovers on Mars.

There is also a flaw design in the Rovers ..Nobodies fault, It's a time line of being on a tight schedule...But It does not really Matter cause the Rovers have out performed there projected design...( Trip time line projection )
