I like going up in October when the weather is a little cooler. A bunch of us rent a coach bus each year and plan an all day event with lunch and wineries and then return to the City and take cabs home.

An excellent time is right now! The Valley of the Moon! The colors and the moons at night in the Napa area can be splendid. It could also be raining as in flood type raining, a problem Napa has dealt with repeatedly over the past years.

Hi,
I live about 1 1/2 hours south of Napa & have visited there January, April, May, with April being the nicest because everything looks so green & vibrant & Springy! I imagine October would also be a nice time, weather-wise, but you'll be seeing Fall colors, so it really depends on which season you prefer.
Napa is where the great wineries are, but less than 30 miles north is Calistoga, one of my favorite areas in the Napa Valley (reasonably-priced hotels containing mineral pools & quaint downtown shops). It's a lovely drive between the two cities.
Check out this trip I found for you where I work as an example of a trip where they enjoyed Napa & Calistoga. http://www.tripwiser.com/trip_planner-California_USA_Relaxing_Week_Napa_Valley?TripId=402880820e2159f8010e29634cc177d2
Enjoy your trip!

Anything but winter. It rains a lot and is foggier than normal and it's not that beautiful even though the hills are green. In the spring there's the Mustard Festival, and all the bright yellow mustard blooms. Summer is always great. Fall, there's crush, and the hills start turning reds and purples. Hot air ballooning usually shuts down after Thanksgiving because of the weather. They never know if the weather will be OK for a flight. Not to say that tourism totally shuts down, but you won't get the beauty of the valley in fog and pouring rain. That's when the hotels and B&B's have the cheapest rates.
So I say spring, summer, fall. Email me if you need any advice on where to go, I live here.

right now is actually my favorite. late september through halloween. weather is usually still in the 70s in the daytime. Wineries are in full crush mode and lots of activities. Leaves are starting to turn, very pleasant.
the only time I would not recommend is january thru march as that is our rainy/winter time. We get the bulk of our rain at that time of year, and napa is EXTREMELY flood prone. It is just depressing that time of year. late april and early may is my second favorite. Just starting to warm up and everything is all green from the rains!
