If it hurts or falls out, then you are doing something wrong. You should not feel it at all. My mom told me a trick when I finally figured out how to get it in there correctly.... tuck the string in (just barely inside) so walking around doesn't tug the string and pull it out.
Good luck!

You shouldn't feel the tampon at all if it is inserted properly. If you are feeling some discomfort, and you are inserting the tampon in the proper manner and going deep enough, then you should try going down a size (use regular instead of supers). Also, you may need a little lubrication if you are not having heavy periods. Just put a little KY on Vaseline on the tip of the applicator before inserting the tampon.
It can take some practice to get this right when you first start using them.
Good Luck.. welcome to womanhood!

The way you can tell if it's properly inserted is that you can't feel the tampon inside you. If you feel it pushing down or it causes discomfort, then you should either try to push it back in or remove it. It's not properly inserted or it's sliding out. Sliding out can be a problem for women who have had children since that area isn't as tight as it once was.

If it's inserted properly, you'll feel no pain. I know sometimes, when I haven't inserted it far enough, there's discomfort so I literally have to push it up a little further until that feeling goes away. Just push the tampon in far enough until your fingers are touching your area but not so far that the string disappears!

If you don't feel any pain or discomfort it is in properly. Tampons shouldn't hurt when they are inserted correctly.
