Power-steering is hydraulic, has a pump. It sounds like the alternator is dying and may be creating drag on the serpentine belt and this would cause loss of PSteering since the PS pump would not be spinning as fast as it should.
You will normally get some obvious noise from the alternator if the bearings are going bad.

The other thing that happens on models where one serpentine belt drives everything is the "harmonic balancer" now just called the crankshaft pulley will slip if the rubber between the inner and outter pulley disintegrates and the crank pulley slips and slides until it falls off. This can be caused by a locked up alternator or A/C compressor or smog pump or water pump. Usually the belt will snap or jump off before the crank pulley fails due to a locked up pump or compressor but you never know which will happen first.

Good Luck!

EITHER THE ALTERNATOR, SERPENTINE BELT OR THE TENSIONER.
