My beloved EN500 will not start! Press the electric start button and it sounds like the starter motor rotates but the engine does not turn over (like it is not engaging?) Any ideas what I should check first? (Engine is fine, certainly not seized - only 4400 miles!)

First thing to do is to take off the center cap on the left side engine cover. Insert a socket with a t-bar and rotate the motor forward and backwards. There is always the chance your motor is flooded and not able to turn over. Remove the socket and put your finger on the bolt head. Hit the starter button. Can you feel anything? If you feel a vibration then but it doesn't turn then the starter clutch is probably bad. If you feel nothing then the starter gear or chain may have failed.

All starter clutch/chain/gears are located under the left side engine cover. You do need a special puller for the generator/flywheel, otherwise it's very straight forward.

Your motor has very low miles so it's odd for a starter clutch to be worn out unless you do lots of short trips, don't change oil or have a factory defect. Let me know if I can provide any other information.

Put your hand on the starter motor when you try to start the bike.
If you feel it spinning and it will not engage the engine - most likely the starter clutch is slipping.
You should be able to hear a high pitched metal whizzing/ringing noise - that's the starter clutch.
Without seeing your bike, that's all I can offer.
Good luck.

check the ht caps are on the leads and are on the spark plug properly.charge your battery up cause sometimes a bike will just not turn over unless the batteries voltage is high enough. check your ignition fuse. take out your plug and rest it , still connected to the ht cap, on your cylinder ,( the thread of the plug ) and slowly turn the engine over to see if your plugs are sparking okay. if they are the spark will be blue, if not, clean them and set the gap. put back in finger tight and a quarter turn to tighten. you can check your coil resistance if you have a meter. if your starter motor isnt moving. check the solenoid. and your ignition pick ups. good luck

There is a starter motor clutch that spins and locks to the crankshaft (usually the crankshaft) when you press the starter button. that's one possibility. The other is the starter relay. But if you say the motor spins, it's probably the starter motor clutch.
