Web based is much better when you have to access it from different machines, as all the emails are kept on the server. Generally smtp clients can store more than most web mail systems allow, and many have additional features not available on the web.

I agree to the answers above. But what is more interesting is that the emails stored on the web based email server (like yahoo) is that the mails won't get infected with virus. I mean they have good protection from Viruses unlike our SMTP. The moment I download the mail onto my system, and if I have virus on my system, the mail gets infected. Yahoo or any Web based mail server makes sure the incoming emails are free from any viruses. Their antivirus solutions are usually updated with latest definitions.

Well, it's actually all SMTP - that is the only mail transport protocol used on the internet. What you're really asking is which interface - web-based or a local client. I use both as appropriate; a local client on my home machine, web-based when I'm out and about. Local clients (such as Outlook Express) tend to offer more functionality.

I agree with Daniel C
it's all the same mail, it's even the same mail server, the only thing you're changing is how you get it.
If built correctly they can both do the exact same thing, so you just need to decide if you want to download to a machine or move around reading mail.

wb based because you can access it from any computer at any time... with SMTP you will need to access it from a computer that has the same ISP

This is like asking which is better to drink, hot coffee, or cold lemonade? Circumstances will determine this.
It really depends upon what you prefer and what you need. Either can be suitable; circumstances define which is better for you.
