Because it prepares you for life so you can take care of yourself and the government doesn't have to support you. Have you ever seen a person that cannot read, write, count, or do math have a job where they can support themselves? The only thing you'd be qualified for is picking up trash otherwise.

It's main mission is to teach you in various subjects on various levels, and try to get you on the highest level of skill possible. It's also a great place (and a terrible place) to socialize and possibly make life long friends.
Throughout the centuries schools, colleges, and universities were set up to teach specialized or various skills. Throughout the years, starting back in B.C. era they were set up differently with different expectations. In the BC era and the times of Christ, many people were taught at home and in the church. In fact you can argue that home schooling was with us since the beginning of time, early men were very domestic oriented and they didn't have big cities or huge building to go back and forth too. Also back in ancient Greece they made the first universities for the elite and around the Roman times they started the idea of public schooling by providing free education. So even in 100 years or more we'll have school, it'll just be different.

I find it quite funny that Dharmanator so eagerly took apart every aspect of the asker's question, yet chose to start his/her verbal assassination by starting a sentence with a coordinating conjunction. There are many other grammatical errors; but who am I to correct an apparent Grammar God.

We need intelligent people in the future to run the country. I know you think you know everything now (as did I at a young age), but trust me, with age *usually* comes wisdom (yeah, you've already heard it from your stupid lame parents, lol).

So that you can learn to put a comma after Dude, an apostrophe in I'm, use a capital letter at the start of a sentence, use a capital I in I'm, use 'why' instead of the letter y and to use only one period.
I think this many errors in such a short question demonstrates quite nicely the need to pay attention in school.
