You don't have to change your name right away. I added my husband's last name to mine several months after we were married. Technically I have two names for my last names.
You just need to bring your marriage certificate when you are ready. You would need to go to Motor Vehicles and the Social Security's office and make sure all your legal documents are consistent.

You do not need to change it by deed poll! If you decide to use your hubby's name later on, all you have to do is write to EVERYONE who knows you by your maiden name, informing of the name change, enclosing a copy of the marriage certificate, so a link to the name you are using is seen. I've been married for 11 months and my husband wants to use my name! Best wishes for the big day!

of the people i know who use the hyphenated name, they mostly regret it because it is usually lengthy to say and write. and the kids will still need a last name. so, will your kids be sue & jon smith-anderson or will they end up just using their father's last name anyway?
typically, you would keep your own last name if you are already established and known in your industry. any name changes you do are easiest and cheapest at the time of the marriage license. any other time requires a lawyer and lots of paperwork.
you can also consider adopting a new last name for both of you that combines your current last names (warren & smith become the sarren or with family), but this again will involve lawyers and court fees.
consider your reasons for wanting to keep or change your name and decide from there.

In Spain we all keep our surname after marriage, we don't change it. We cannot choose if we want to get the husband's surname or our surname, but to be honest I think thats the best thing, so if I were you I would keep my surname or I would just add my husband's

You can change your name by deed pole on line for about £50.
Why would you not want to take on your partners name? are you sure that you really get married.
If you commit to marriage you should fully comit not just pick and choose what bits you want.
I feel that people who use double barrelled names are pretentious and think that they are of a social status above themselves.

Its all down to which you prefer. I don't think you'll be able to choose which documents have which name, its either double barrelled, your name or his name but only that you can decide, whichever you feel sounds best. If you still can't decide do a poll and cast a vote!
I kept my maiden name ...

I transitioned mine, first with the hyphenated maiden/married and then a year later to just my married, but only for legal purposes. You should ask your husband how he feels. Mine felt a bit disrespected by my holding onto my maiden..like I wasnt fully accepting him as my husband. Its a pride thing for them...you taking their name.
In any event, the change of it later required getting a new social security card and then taking that and the marriage license into DMV. Whether you do it as soon as you marry or later..its just more time waiting in lines for you.

I could understand if your last name was "interesting" but Birchall isn't at all interesting. Unless your parents only have daughters in which case i can understand your dilemma. Double barrel names are getting too common nowadays. Either way it's to you and your husband to be....Good luck in your forthcoming wedding
