The BJ's can't blame young age. The first season I believe they ended up with right around 70 points, just short of 30 wins (give or take a game, I don't remember).

Also , the Minnesota Wild got into the league the same year, and they've crushed many of good teams' dreams in the play-offs since then.

The truth of the matter is money. The fact that winning is absent is one thing, but when the scouting is off, you can tell that resources and interest is not what it should be in the organization.

The BJs obviously have decent personell on paper in Nash, Fedorov, Modin, Vyborny, Murray, Foote, Campbell, Peca, and Norrena, but a good coach and most of all a good GM know how to create the right synergy and room to succeed for their talents. If a player can't adept or fit in the system, it's time to ship him out for a better match (both for him and for the team), and there are some of the guys above that are known as 100% headcases. They would have been better of scouting for fresh fruit of the tree as opposed to picking up big has-been or never-quite-will-be guys from other teams.

Now, looking at it from a different angle.... The Browns, the Bengals, the Reds, the Indians, and the Cavs (pre-Lebron) seem unable to put it together except for once in a while as well, so maybe the problem is to be found elsewhere?

Unfortunately I think the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes is the worst of all time. They've been in the NHL since 1980 and I do believe they've won fewer postseason games and series than ANY other team, other than a couple of the teams that have only been around a few years. I say "unfortunately" because I'm a native Winnipegger and they've always been "my team".

To whoever wrote about some people being surprised that only Edmonton made the playoffs that first year, I don't think it was surprising. The WHA teams were raped and pillaged by the NHL when they joined. I was more surprised that ANY WHA team made the playoffs.

The Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals/California Seals/Cleveland Barons franchise was a lot worse.

The New York/Brooklyn Americans are a damn close second

To m d
The Atlanta/Calgary Flames made it to the playoffs in their 2nd season
The Buffalo Sabres made it to the playoffs in their 3rd season
The Florida Panthers made it to the Stanley Cup final in their 3rd year
The Minnesota Wild made it to playoffs in their 3rd season
The New York Islanders made it to the playoffs in their 3rd season
The San Jose Sharks made it to the playoffs in their 3rd season
The Anaheim Ducks made it to the playoffs in their 4th season
The Kansas City Scouts/Colorado Rockies/New Jersey Devils made it to the playoffs in their 4th season
The Tampa Bay Lightning made it to the playoffs in their 4th season
The Ottawa Senators made it to the playoffs in their 5th season
The Vancouver Canucks made it to the playoffs in their 5th season

In fact, only 4 times took longer than 5 years
The Washington Capitals took 9 seasons, and then made it 14 straight years
The Nashville Predators too 6 seasons
The Atlanta Thrashers took 7 seasons
This will be Columbus' 7th season coming up. I don;t expect they will make the playoffs, but I think they have the right management in place to get them there in 2-3 years

I've only included true expansion teams. In 1967...4 of the 6 new teams were guaranteed the playoffs because they were in the same division. The 1979 NHL/WHA merger consisted of teams that had pre-existed and therefore could play as a team. The fact that only Edmonton made the playoffs the first year surprised a lot of people

Columbus isn't the worst! The Bluejackets came close to tying the Maple Leafs in October of 06.

M D, I can name at least one like, oh, I don't know, Florida Panthers.

The Jacket's management is worse than the Leafs, that's why. At least the Leafs management have some kind of hockey sense.

Go Leafs, by the way.
