Is it bad luck to change color of a sailboat? The boat is due for new bottom paint, but I wonder if there may be any "bad luck" associated with changing the color of the boat to something I like more.

Forgive me for calling it "bottom paint". What I meant was the color of the hull, sorry. I ask because of all of the other superstitions of boats.

Just a thought by changing the hull color every time you scratch it the original color will show>An unless you take every idem off the tape job will let some old color threw>>Been there and done that>

According to superstition, as long as you don't paint a vessel with "colors of the land", you should have no problems. That would rule out things like greens and browns.

As far as the "bottom paint" goes, I assume you're speaking of anti-fouling paint; it can be anything that doesn't offend the fish. There have been stories of large sailboats, with black or dark grey bottom paint, being pestered by amorous whales while sailing offshore.

Not bad luck at all. There are no bottom paint superstitions. In fact, it might be GOOD LUCK. With a different color, you can see when the paint is failing to provide complete coverage and is wearing through.

Not bad luck to change the colour but very bad luck to change the name of a boat, they often sink when given a new name!

There is no luck, You are only as good a sailor as the worst storm you endured.
If you are that superstitious, you should not do things like sail or drive, think of all of the superstitions that you do not even know about. Do you believe that you must know about a law of the universe for it to affect you?

Nope! Its supposed to be bad luck to change the name but thats old sailors twaddle!!! We have changed the colour of sail boats over the years and names and that "bad luck myth" is horse ****!

I know this sounds stupid but you do know the hull below water line has to be done in anti fouling dont you, not paint!

There is no such thing as luck. Ask any ship owner and see how many time a vessel changes its name in the time is is employed, and of course as the owner and name changes so do the colours.

It is okay to change the color,
BUT NEVER CHANGE THE NAME.

Bottom paint is used below the waterline to help prevent the growth of algae
