I would think that libs would hate the UN. They cause wars, stand by while entire tribes are wiped out and refuse to do anything when food earmarked for starving civilians is comondeered. Libs are supposed to be for peace and feeded the poor of the world right??

The UN does NOT cause wars. The UN STOPS wars. It intervenes in conflicts and tries to end them, and sits in on other countries who need security that they themselves can't provide.

The UN may be slow to reaction when genocide is concerned (I would personally have done something about Darfur at least 2 years ago - not only just now) - but FAR better to do something about it late than ignore it, as would almost certainly happen were there no UN.

The UN also does not stop the poor being fed - they are the sole source of food for some drought stricken African nations. Without UN food then entire countries would starve to death.

You seem to pick up on 1 or 2 flaws with the organisation and then say the organisation is utterly flawed. How very easy it would be to do the same with your american government. But I shall be magnanimous and say that BOTH do far more good than bad.

They cause wars? Actually, they tried to stop the US from going to Iraq in early 2003, but the Bush people decided to flaunt their noses at international law. Yes, the UN has made some really bad decisions, but having a forum for international dialogue and cooperation is important. By the way, much of the world thinks that the UN is a puppet of the US.

Vaughn: "While the UN may not succeed in all of its initiatives, it's still making the effort, and has still caused major changes--especially in fighting hunger and helping provide medical care for tens of thousands of children across the world. It also provides a forum where people across the world can meet and try to discuss our differences in a peaceful manner, which is better than anything else we have."

**I agree totally that the UNHCR especially has done a lot of good things. The U.N. is the only organization that has the resources (with the help of mainly the U.S. and N.A.T.O. military resources) to be able to help out refugees on a massive scale. The U.N. is also very capable when it comes to medical and food aid.

However, The U.N. has had horrible effects on military conflicts. In the Balkans, vague and politically unthought-out U.N. policies actually accelerated the genocide and violence. It got so bad that only the full-use of force by NATO forces acting outside the UN (and even against the UNs wishes) was needed to stop the whole-sale violence.

In Kosovo, once again U.N. policies did nothing but accelerate and prolong the violence. Once again, NATO forces had to step in and act decisively against the UNs wishes.

In Iraq, the UN applied sanction after sanction for years that basically destroyed the infrastructure of Iraq and resulted in only the deaths of a lot of civilians and did nothing to the Iraqi government. UN weapons inspectors also catalogued thousands of pounds of weaponized nerve agents and did nothing to keep track of them once Iraq stopped cooperating with the inspectors.

There has been almost no world criticism directed towards the UN. Why? Because that would be self-incriminating when it is just to easy to just blame the largest country in the world for failures.

The UN has a place - and that helping civilian refugees and starving children. So I hope the UN never falls apart, but I sincerely hope that the UN starts to do a better job at protecting civilians in times of conflict and not just make half-hearted attempts that look good on paper.

When has the UN ever "caused" a war? What nonsense.

As far as standing by, the US wields enormous influence via our Security Council vetos and the fact that we are the biggest funder of the UN.

Most of UN's inaction in the face of genocidal tragedy can be traced to unwillingness for the US to get on board, or outright obstruction by the US. Same goes will unwillingness to protect UN initiatives.

Have you actually looked into the humanitarian affairs they've conducted, from lessening the threat of left over landmines to helping those affected by the disaster in Chernobyl?

I think many have misconceptions about the role of the UN where the US is concerned.

US Leftists seem to look to the UN as a higher authority than our own US Constitution and this should concern all Americans, because it impacts our sovereignty.

Because the UN makes the decisions for them pretty much regarding world issues. So if the decision later on turns out bad, or the people turn against it, the democrats have something to fall back on and cast the blame.

I think the ones that do support the UN do so out of their longing for a one-world government, and the hatred its member nations heap on countries such as the US.

Remember that most of the nations that make the UN up are communist, socialist or dictatorships.
