When I was breast-feeding, my doctor prescribed a birth control pill with no estrogen so that it wouldn't affect the baby at all. Once I was finished breast-feeding, I went back to the kind with estrogen.

I breastfed my son for 14 months. For the first 6 I used the depo shot, but I didn't like it. Then my doctor put me on ortho-tri-cyclen. You should talk to your doctor about it. I think there are even lower dose pills then the one he gave me. I didn't have any problem with the pills affecting my milk production, but I had been breast feeding for 6 months and my supply was pretty established. Plus I had started him on solids, so he wasn't nursing as frequently as he had at first. Talk to your doctor because there are pills that you can use when breastfeeding.

Mirena IUD. It's inserted at your 6 week postpartum check up (or whenver you decide ou want it), its good for 5 years, has little hormones in it at all, and I've stopped having periods all together. Plus there's no "user error" like with condoms, pills, etc. Its more effective than either of those methods.

Also if you decide to have another baby, it can be removed and you can literally start trying that day.

i was told by my doctor that the only known thing safe for a breastfeeding mom was the low-estrogen birth control pill. the brand I'm on is errin. I hate the low-e pill, but it has to do while I'm breastfeeding.

We use nothing, we just pray and let the Lord decide when we are to have another baby. We are fully prepared and able to have another baby is we become pregnant. I am still breastfeeding my 10 month old, plan to for at least 2 years. Haven't got pregnant yet. Whenever we do, we know it is supposed to be. Not something I recommend for everyone, but it works for us!

When I was nursing, I took the mini-pill. It's a no estrogen variety. After I stopped nursing, went back to normal pill.
