check for packet loss
ping times to multiple servers
verify physical routing ( is there a cable under carpet or anything that has high traffic around it)
are you losing a wireless lan connection or a wired lan connection
with wireless connections many things can happen and cause interference.

I doubt your problem is stability of the LAN connection. I suspect it is from the ISP, especially if you are downloading very large files. Most household grade ISP have a capacity limit that is invoked. If you exceed the capacity limit set by the ISP they may drop the connection. I suspect this is the problem.

The solution is to purchase a commercial grade connection. You pay more but then you are using it at a higher level.

Wireless or wired? Could be your ISP is disconnecting you. They can do that if their systems detects that you are taking up too much bandwidth.

You should provide more details. Type of system, Operating System, Internet Connection Type (DSL, Dial up, etc), hardware types, etc.
