I just want to buy a handgun for target practice/long-range shooting. I'm not going to bring it with me in public for protection. Do I need a license just to buy a handgun, or do I need to be of age and have a clean record?

depends on where you live.

In most southern and midwestern states you don't need anything beyond a drivers license and the ability to pass the background check.

In some north eastern states you have to get a license and some cities restrict those to the point that you can't ever get one.

Not a license per se, but depending on the state a background check to get one

Where do you live? The laws are so varied, there is no one-answer-that-fits-all available.

If I lived where I felt I needed to carry one for protection from other people, I would very seriously consider moving.

If you are in the U.S., there are federal laws regarding age and legal status that must be met for you to purchase one from a dealer.

I am guessing you are referring to registration, as a license would be to carry the gun. These laws will vary state to state. I live on the Wisconsin/Michigan border. You do not need a license, but Michigan requires you register the gun. Wisconsin does not. Federal law does require you pass a background check for any firearm.

Where do you live,? your not aware of the laws in your state !
Come on there dude get it together, unless you live in say Idaho, where they do background checks, and if all clear you walk out the door .And you need to have a very clean record, specially for a hand gun. !

Depends where you live.

In most cities and towns in the People's Republic of Mass you need to be of a certain age, take a safety course, and then sue the local police chief.

You need some form of ID. You get the license to carry afterward.

You have to fill out an application, first. If approved, you can buy a hand gun. You cannot carry it unless you are licensed.

You will need a license in most states. If not most criminals would say that that was for practice
