The only factions that we hear about being a part of the insurgency is Shiites and Sunni's but there is a third faction, the Kurds. According to our own military, the secterian violence has diminished mostly because these factions have 'segregated' themselves by ethnic cleaning. Why not just take the land and divide it amongst the factions, giving the land that borders Iran and Syria to the Shiite, the land that borders Saudi Arabia to the Sunni's and the border towards Turkey to the Kurds???

wow...alot of quick responses.

Rob: divide my city? in case you haven't noticed there are 'divisions' in every urban city in America. Rarely do you find that neighborhoods are "racial diverse" nor will you find the various cultures of our great nation socializing...not at church, not at school, etc. Blacks socialize with blacks, Chinese socialize with Chinese, etc. You have heard of places like Chinatown, Little Korea, Chocolate City?? so please..........spare me your rhetoric. We tolerate each other..no more than that....and look how long it took us to do that???

Delphi & Grips: your comments about telling the Iraqi people how to live and imposing our will. Excuse me?? isn't that what we have been doing by forcing democracy on a country that has for centuries lived under a totally different type of government based on their religion? Is this not one of the complaints that the Iraqi's have now is that they are tired of the US telling them how?

Dr. Deal.....congratulations on your History diploma. No sir, i did not miss the break up of the Soviet Union nor did i miss the fighting in Yugoslavia. Neither do I remember that the US had such a prominent role in the decisions that govern those countries as we have in Iraq. I whole heartedly agree - the people of Iraq need to make those choices.

the question asked was to stir debate, I do not want the US to divide any territory......just want the people of Iraq to stand and make their own decisions EVEN if it means dividing the land for peace.

Yes so that we can clean the mess that England caused when they destroyed Mesopotamia to create Iraq. Turkey would object because they may still not trust the Kurds.

The majority of Al Qaeda are Sunnis not Shias.

Most of the 9-11 were born in Saudi Arabia and Al Qaeda was not an ally of Saddam Hussein.

Sounds good to me, always remembering however that it is someone ELSE'S country we are dividing.

Still, the Kurds are the closest thing we have to friends over there, and they deserve some protection from us. Maybe we just have the others give them their northern 1/3 then let the other two groups work it out for themselves as to the remaining 2/3?

(Slightly facetious, but the idea isn't that we govern their country, but that we take out Saddam, give them a chance to stand on their own feet, then go home ourselves.)

edit, I guess what I mean is that I agree with crabby blindguy, except the one group I'd feel guilty about, walking away, is the Kurds.

I LOVE the idea. And i think it would work. What is stopping it is one of our allies.... Turkey

Turkey hates the Kurds. There are seperatist groups in TUrkey, trying to break off a seperate region there. Turkey is much against a autonomous Kurd region, they feel it would embolden the kurds in turkey.

Those muslims need to be separated, because IRAQ is a false country anyway. It was artifically held together by saddam. Nature would HAVE iraq split apart.

Becase the sunni and shitte believe a different man was to take over after muhommad, they are at war with eachother over this to this day. And if you think they SHOULDNT be separated, and they should live in peace, you are a idiot who thinks there is logic recgonizable by westerners in their politics, which there is not.

i think of this could have made plenty greater experience approximately 2 years in the past whilst the insurgency grow to be nonetheless at a low ebb. this is not any longer ordinary to declare what result it could have now. between the topics in coming up protection forces has been that the Iraqi's who're knowledgeable as police or protection rigidity tend to prefer to paintings of their areas, or areas that are alongside their very own sectarian strains. there have been some issues of police and squaddies refusing to paintings in specific components, and Biden's plan ought to help this. yet another difficulty is infiltration of Iraqi protection forces via insurgents. this is doubtful if the provincial suggestion via Biden could have a incredible bring about this, whether it must be that an insurgency interior of a set is greater truthfully pointed out if that group is all sunni or all shia. the nice and cozy button is this must be finished via the Iraqi government at this element and there are provisions of their shape which might enable for it. in reality, they have in simple terms recently surpassed a regulation which permits any state in Iraq (there are at the instant some 20+ of them) can p.c. to be triumphant from the important authority and govern themselves. If civil conflict does destroy out in ernest, Kurds could do in simple terms that interior the north. All in all, there are no chuffed ideas here.

We shouldn't divide anything, don't forget it's not our country it's theirs! Maybe we should let them govern, and just be there for assistance. They keep complaining their hands are tied, let's untie them and give them the reins! We can't stay forever and when we leave they will be at war with someone else for sure, whether they want to or not. What a mess, those poor people, I'd hate to have to live through a war and keep my family safe and my kids have war be all that they know. The world is going to pay big and for a long time for this one. thanks alot George and friends

If anything that would likely increase the inner fighting and turmoil. Imagine being uprooted and relocated from from the place that you might have been born and raised, leaving behind the graves of beloved family members. Or moving to an area that simply isn't to your liking.

No, that would just encourage and feed the animosity with those people. Tehy need to start learning that it's ok not to kill someone just because they have thier ways, however to start promoting pride in the Iraqi Government and all of the sacrifies that have gone into making that possible.

What do you mean "we"? Yoou're one of the people who think we shouldn't even be there, now you want us to impose our will and divide a country up.
