The answer to your question will differ from person to person as they will tell you that the one they use is the best, but that is there personal preference.
From my experience , antivirus and anti spy ware is only as good as its data base, it does not matter, which one it is, if it has not got the virus in its data base then it will not pick up that particular virus,
There are thousands of wild viruses out there; your guess to how many is as good as mine. So I think in picking any antivirus and antispyware, is down to personal choice and which one you are happy with.
I have tried out most of them, paid and free versions and they all have their good points and their bad points. The two that I would not recommend, from my experience with them are Norton and Mcafee.
My experience with Norton was that it slowed my pc down that it was like having a virus installed, and Mcafee would not work for me. I have tried True Sword, did not think much of it gets rid of 3 viruses and then you have to buy it to remove the rest. That did not impress me.
Ones that I would recommend are AVG, ZONE ALARM, + OTHERS
antivirus and spyware programs, if you are looking for a free antivirus and spyware, well I have been using these two for the last couple of month or so, on a trial by myself, and so far, they are as good as any, that I have tried, if not better, since installing them they have picked up any and all known viruses and spyware.
The spyware impressed me, when I installed a torrent tool bar, that was full of spyware it not only removed the spyware it removed the tool bar as well, which impressed me.
The two programs are AVAST HOME and SPYWARE TERMINATOR; I would recommend these two programs to protect your systems.

Spybot runs from a massive database of known malware and spyware purveyors. It doesn't list every cookie, just the ones it knows to be tracking cookies. These are cookies that can tell a site a little about your surfing style. In general they are completely harmless, but you don't need them, so as one person has already said, so get rid of them. Spybot does NOT work on assumptions. If it says something is suspect, then it's suspect.

Unlike a virus checker that runs in the background, it's okay to use more than one spyware program. There is no such thing as a perfect program however. Spybot and Ad-Aware are considered the best by a long shot, but they still don't pick up everything. No single program does. I use three and each picks up different things. So, when someone says their program is the best, it's just a matter of opinion. Use the ones you feel comfortable with because it's your computer.

Set a restore point. Start | All programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore in Windows XP Pro. Then run Spybot again. Google any entries that you aren't sure of, but you can probably safely delete anything that Spybot finds. You should also run AdAware, use Mozilla instead of IE, and clear private data regularly (Mozilla can clear it automatically upon exit). If you want to stick with IE then you should delete cookies and clear history regularly - at least every time you go on-line. Tools | Internet Options | General.

that might assist you isolate the reason, open job supervisor (actual-click on your taskbar on the backside and choose job supervisor) and watch your processor and memory utilization. interior job supervisor, click the overall performance tab. the actual line of green & black graphs practice how lots of your processor is getting used. the 2d line of graphs practice how lots memory is getting used. Watch the two a type of graphs as your workstation starts off to sluggish. word which of those, if the two, are severe. it is tremendous to your processor to spike as much as 70%, 80%, even one hundred% now and returned, whether it won't stay there. If the processor utilization continues to be way up, you have have been given an issue with a application overworking your processor. As for memory, a typical workstation as we talk basically working with mandatory startup data and a few antivirus application working, could desire to apply between 225 and 250MBs of memory. in the adventure that your's is working severely larger, then there's an issue right here. additionally, examine decrease than the golf green graphs and to the main suitable interior the container categorised actual memory. the completed line exhibits you the way lots memory you have put in. Mine says 1047276, that's type of 1GB (1047 megabytes and alter). examine what your's is. in the adventure that your memory utilization equals or exceeds the completed quantity of memory put in on your workstation, this could be an issue. if that's the case, you will possibly need to look at what's working and see what courses you may on the element of liberate memory. My advice is that your problem isn't unavoidably undercover agent ware/spyware working. it may desire to be brought about with the aid of too many "solid" courses working. Run too many courses, and your workstation is locking up on you. till you often exhibit screen and cleanup your working courses, you will likely discover many courses working, like Java Updater, Quicktime, iPod Helper, Adobe Acrobat speed launch, and a lot of extra courses which you do no longer prefer working continuously. submit returned in case you think of this could be your problem.
