Tradition dictates that true Scotsmen should wear nothing under the kilt.
In battles in days long gone, the Scottish army would lift their kilts & show the opposing english army (it was usually Englishmen that gave us grief) that if they were tough enough to march through Heather & Nettles with nothing covering their tender areas then they were tough enough to withstand anything the english could throw at them.
I would suggest that if you are hiring a kilt then wear underwear because goodness knows how many mens "bits" have touched that kilt before yours!

RE:
Do people who wear Scottish Kilts really have no underwear on or is it just a saying?

Be prepared to have a lot of people try to look up that kilt. If you're going to be outside and if there's a possibility it could be windy, then you should also be prepared to show off the goods. Here's another thing to consider. What would the bride think of you going commando? I only ask because if you do go commando and everyone knows about it, then you may attract attention ... away from HER. If you believe she will have a good sense of humor about it, then go ahead. But if she is potentially the type to get bent out of shape over not being the total center of attention at her reception, then consider dark underwear or even bike shorts.

Hello Lad,

The question could be turned around, do people who wear pants wear underwear? It depends on you, you want to wear something then do so. But I was born in Scotland, and to enjoy wearing kilts with short pants under it, just doesn't do what God intended. Keep the freedom and try it either way.

Depends on the weather. I don't look up their kilts, but I do believe they wear underwear. The material itches. I wear underwear under mine because I'm afraid the pin would pop open and display everything I have!

I just checked and the man laughed, "No way do we go without bloomers."

Depending on the occasion, a kilt is normally worn with accessories such as a belt, jacket, sporran (a type of pouch), special footwear, and — optionally — underwear (usually black cotton briefs).
