During World War I, Germany occupied the present-day Latvia and Estonia, most of the present-day Ukraine, a substantial part of the present-day Belarus, and some of the Southern Russia. Under the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, Russia conceded the occupied territories to Germany and Austro-Hungarian empire.

Not very far. The Zar had a huge army. Germany and Austria very happy enough that they could keep Russia at bay.
Good leadership, better equipment and a sound strategy secured the eastern front. The plan was from the beginning on, to win in the west and hold the line in the east.
Russia fell due to internal problems not because it was overwhelmed by the Mittelmächte.
