I would not want to be there in the winter (I grew up there) but there is no more beautiful place on earth than the Adirondack Mountains in the fall. Get out of there before the end of October though.
Up around Lake George, Ticonderoga, White Face Mountain, or just about about anyplace in that area.
Staying in Saratoga and driving up to different areas each day is a good idea too, but I recommend staying in a few places in the mountains during your trip also.
Have a great time, wherever you go.

I agree with New England....fabulous in the Fall.
Pennsylvania also has many lovely places to see Fall colors in the mountains.
And Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is exquisite in the Fall. It's along the Appalachians.
In fact, you could stay in Charlottesville, VA (avoid a UVA football weekend!) and tour beautiful Monticello (Jefferson's home) in the mountains, UVA (Jefferson was the architect for that university too) and enjoy the Fall colors in the mountains there. There are vineyards (Horton, Barboursville, etc) that are lovely there too. Charlottesville has nice restaurants too. Maybe you'll run into Dave Mathews....

properly purely a heads up, when I went there it improve into like a mini Las Vegas. The streets had those enormous homes with those styles of loopy lights and casinos and theatres. The falls have been the only organic factor around there! And each thing improve into somewhat costly! And it gets so crowded that they submit indications reading "look ahead to %.-pocketers." yet once you like the full 5 million human beings, won't be in a position to get a seat at a eating place, breakfast costs $80, the full city sounds like Las Vegas, then you will like it. in case you do no longer, then i does no longer recommend going there. And yeah, foodstuff improve into fairly costly. I ordered hen palms and it improve into $20!! For dang hen palms! And the following day breakfast fee $80!! For 4 human beings.

Vermont and New Hampshire are pretty nice for the fall, particularly New Hampshire. The fall foliage peaks in October and there is a lot of beautiful country to see. For a time, I once lived in the north shore of Mass, and took a drive into Nashua, New Hampshire in Oct. '01 and it was awesome.

The Smokey Mountains are beautiful in the Fall, especially when the leaves are changing.
You can stay in Gatlinburg, Cherokee, or Pigeon Forge and there are a lot of activities, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Vermont is nice. You can travel through the mountains. Go on route 100, you can also take the gondolas up Killington Mountain. It is really pretty up there in the fall. If you want more info let me know because I live in Vermont and can give you some more ideas.

I know it sounds kindof blah, but the Biltmore Estate in Asheville , North Carolina is amazing and also soo soo romantic. It is supposed to be beautiful there in the fall. Just google Biltmore Estate to go to their website. At least look at it to see if it is your kind of thing!
