Hi Moon,
Historical places with atmosphere: old Priories, castle ruins, visiting National Trust properties and imagining what it must have been like to live in those grand, beautiful houses centuries ago. Being beside the sea. I love the sea. Walking in the countryside which is just outside my door. The Moors when I always think of Wuthering Heights and wish I could write a story as moving as that one. Visiting different countries. I wrote a novel in three months after visiting Italy I felt so inspired. The list goes on ... it all depends on my mood too, really.

Almost anything can set of my imagination for no apparent reason whatsoever, though it is usually something silly or something that could easily become silly.
It sets of a train of fantasy that I'll follow all the way to its unknown
and completely unexpected destination.
And when I get there it is not uncommon that I'll have no Idea
whatsoever what set me off in the first place, because it will
have no logical connection to the end result.
Thanks for a nice question, and a wonderful day to you to !

Going to War... I've never done it, yet I can't possibly imagine all of the emotions that are associated with a tour of duty.

For me... it's reading anything where they don't force you into agreeing with the opinion of the writer. Seeing a question with no answer, but several possibilities. Clouds. Stars.

My thoughts.. I see it there first in my mind, and that's where my imagination kicks in, and it becomes a wonderful place to escape.

Usually, it is something non-verbal, something beautiful and visual (like art work or a gorgeous sunset) or auditory (like music). You can also get the same kind of effect from reading really well written books.
