It doesn't make a difference, as long as they really mean it.
In other words, it's the voice and body language that counts.
Sometimes, just a nice thankful smile means much more than a refined speech of gratitude.

If it's sincere then either one is great. People don't seem to say it often enough these days. Gratitude is a wonderful thing.

Thank-you is preferable. But now days just an acknowledge ment is fine. I am not going to start running my preferences on Em.

More often than not,I say Thank you,when people keep the door open,or if I've dropped something and they inform,that kind of stuff.
If it's a mate coming back from the bar with a pint,probably 'thanks'
