Age, the bigger the difference in age the more likely the older one is a sugar daddy. The key word here being daddy.

It can be age - for example a sugar daddy is someone who is noticeably older than their partner and clearly if they didn't have the money wouldn't have that partner. Therefore (to me) that is a sugar daddy. Whereas being giving is something you do because you care about someone and you do it to help them out, because you want to or for any of a number of reasons that are tied into mutual respect, even love!
So the fine line, is mutual respect when that mutual respect either never existed or has developed into a dependancy on their partner giving all the time and them taking then you start getting into sugar daddy territory!

A little something for a birthday, an anniversary, a holiday, like a watch, or an iPod, or smaller gifts...that's what a boyfriend gives another boyfriend he loves. Now if you're talking cars, clothes, wads of cash, trips to lavish resort spots...uh, that sounds more like sugar daddy time! Especially if the receiver is not having to do that much for the giver to get these things. And it's especially true if the giver is older, VERY well-off and maybe, shall we say, not stunningly attractive? The receiver is probably younger, certainly a looker (though that part's pretty subjective) and either working sporadically or not at all.

A sugar daddy's primary relationship is economic. A giving boyfriend's primary relationship is personal. But if one is too giving, others may confuse him for being a sugar daddy.

A giving boyfriend makes gifts because of love or caring for the recipient.

A sugar daddy makes gifts from fear that if he doesn´t, the recipient will leave the relationship.

At least this is how I see it.

If it's not being reciprocated in any way, I'd say it is more towards the sugar daddy end of the spectrum.
But if both parties are happy, does it really matter either way?

The difference lies in the person who is taking! If the person takes because that5 is their main agenda, then your a sugar daddy. If the taker does so because you are in love and that person appreciates your offerings, then you are a giving boy friend!

The person that receives the generosity.
Scandalous will try to take advantage of one's generosity, or even mistake it for a weakness. They are the ones that like sugar daddys.
