i just recently bought a new laptop with the following specs:
intel core 2 duo T 7300 2.0 ghz
2 gb RAM
Nvidia 8600 GMT
120 GB 5400 rpm ghard drive
it's a vostro and i should be able to play most games; however when i play half life 2 my computer gets really hot and starts making all this noise and sometimes the game freezes. No it's not the problem with my hardware because even the game itself is recommending my system to the highest possible video settings and my computer has a 5.3 on the vista scoring index thingy. So is it safe for me to continue playing?

Whoa! I'd get a laptop cooler.

Watch your Sunday ads. I picked up an Antec laptop cooler for $9.99 (after rebates). I did get my rebates.

If your "computer gets really hot and starts making all this noise" then it is hardware.
I wounder how they fit all those cooling fans into a laptop.
It could be that your Nvidia gets so hot it unseats itself and other than that, sorry, I don't have a clue.
And, I don't care what the sales people tell you, hard gamers need a desktop.

If your computer is getting hot then it is a hardware issue.

Software is not a heating unit.
