x - y = 2
x + y = 9
--------------
2x = 11
x = 5.5 speed of boat
y = 3.5 speed of stream

The speed to go upstream (against the current) equals the speed of the boat in still water (what its speedometer indicates) - the speed of the current. If B represents the speed of the boat in still water, then 9 = B - 2, B = 11
